Essential Adventures in Costa Rica – What You Need to See

Costa Rica is one of those destinations that has something for everyone. The first international trip I planned for myself brought me to Costa Rica. While this country hadn’t made my initial list of places I had to see, now that I have seen it myself, I couldn’t imagine missing out on the wonders of this place. I planned a road trip through Costa Rica in celebration of my college graduation, and these are the experiences that have stuck with me since. I had always had a desire to travel, but the adventures I had in Costa Rica forever shaped my approach to every destination I’ve visited since

Explore the Cloud Forest

Exploring the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

Cloud Forests are a rare type of rainforest found at high altitudes, and you certainly won’t want to miss the chance to explore one yourself while in Costa Rica. You have several options for visiting the cloud forest. I had an incredible experience at the Montverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve on my trip and spotted wildlife such as the resplendent quetzal, coati, and capuchin monkeys.

Details for Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

The reserve is open 7am – 4pm daily for self-guided tours that offer access to nature trails and viewpoints. A day pass is $26 for adults and $13 for children. There is also a $5 parking fee. They also offer a number of guided tour options if you are interested. I recommend getting there earlier in the morning to get the most out of your day pass and enjoy cooler temperatures.

Other Options to See the Cloud Forest in Costa Rica

While Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve certainly is the most popular, I’ve also come across the following options for cloud forest adventures in Costa Rica that sound like they would be worth checking out.

  • Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve
  • Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve

Go Canyoning in the Rainforest

Canyoning Tour in La Fortuna

I took a canyoning tour with Pure Trek while I was in the La Fortuna area, and it was a highlight of the entire trip. There was something so exhilarating about rappelling down waterfalls in a rainforest. It was unlike anything I’d ever done, and if you’re looking for an experience to really make you feel like you’re on an adventure, this is it. Pure Trek offers several other experiences and tours that you might be interested in so be sure to check them out.

Soak in the Thermal Hot Springs

Relaxing at the Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa

Costa Rica really does off the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. The thermal hot springs in the Arenal Volcano area offer a great way to soak in the beauty of the natural landscape. There are many hot springs in the area, but I opted to visit the Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa. You don’t have to stay at the resort to enjoy their extensive property. I purchased a day pass that gave access to their hot springs from 10am to 10pm and an option that included dinner at their on site restaurant. You’ll want to reserve a spot ahead of time to make sure their is availability on the day you’d like to visit.

Discover the Plethora of Wildlife in Costa Rica

The wildlife is a highlight of this destination, so keep your eyes peeled as you’re out and about. The Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails had its own restaurant, observation deck, and 7-miles of trails to explore. Staying here was such a treat as it was brimming with wildlife including coati, hummingbirds, cane toads, and great curassows. The view of the sunset over Lake Arenal was also spectacular in its own right. I highly recommend this place whether you choose to stay or purchase a day pass.

Bonus: If you’re heading towards the Puerto Viejo area, I’d also check out the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica for an informative tour about sloths and their habitats.

Stroll Along One of Costa Rica’s Many Black Sand Beaches

Costa Rica boasts several black sand beaches. I visited Playa Negra near Puerto Viejo. Of the country’s black sand beaches, this one was fairly quiet and was the perfect spot for watching the sunset. Some others to check out include Playa Hermosa near Jaco and Playa Negra in Guanacaste.

Your Adventures in Costa Rica Are Sure to Be Unforgettable

This country really is a gem of bucket list worthy experiences and views. I spent a week driving across Costa Rica, and I only scratched the surface. This list is just a starting point of the incredible things to do with your time there. You can view my full itinerary here. From day one of that trip, I knew Costa Rica would be one of those places I hoped to revisit, and I truly can’t wait for the day I get to explore more of what this beautiful country has to offer from postcard perfect beaches to awe-inspiring views of the Arenal Volcano.
