Packing the Essentials for Winter in Banff & Jasper
Packing for cold weather requires a bit of forethought because the items tend to be bulkier, but once you understand the essentials you’ll need to bring along for winter in Banff and Jasper it is easy enough to manage. Having grown up in East Tennessee, I had never really had reason to purchase proper cold weather gear before this trip. In the years since, I’ve gotten plenty of use out of the items and discovered what I prefer in cold weather gear.

Banff & Jasper Winter Essentials

Insulated Winter Jacket
I purchased my Columbia Heavenly Hooded Jacket with Omni-Heat specifically for this trip, and it has since served me well for years. There are loads of options for insulated jackets, just make sure to bring along one rated for very cold temperatures.
Sweaters/Sweatshirts for mid-layers
I brought along a mix of thicker active tops and sweaters depending on whether we were going to be in town or on the trails for most of the day.
Thermal Base Layers
What material is best for base layers?
There are several options when it comes to base layers depending on how much you want to invest. My trip to Canada was my first really cold destination so, I opted for more budget friendly options. I brought one silk layer, though the brand has since been discontinued. I had good results with these polyester blend base layers. They weren’t as warm as the pricier options, but they were lightweight enough for me to throw on an additional layer if needed on particularly cold days.
- Merino Wool
- Often considered the best for its warmth. Though it can be bulkier and pricier than other options.
- Synthetics (Nylon/Polyester)
- Good option if you are looking for a more budget friendly option.
- Silk
- Lightweight for easy layering, though pricier than alternatives.
Snow Pants
You’ll want to bring along some decent insulated pants like these as well for the colder days. There were times when I simply wore jeans over my thermal layer bottoms, but you’ll want warmer options for days you’re out exploring in the snow.
Hiking Boots or Snow Boots
If you have decent hiking boots already you’ll probably be fine pairing them with thick socks.
Thick Socks
Socks are just as important as the shoes.
Gloves
I brought these, and I was glad to have a pair that worked with my phone’s touch screen.
Beanie & Neck Warmer/Scarf
Function over fashion, but there are plenty of options that provide both. I brought along this neck warmer for those times when I didn’t want to deal with the bulk of a scarf. I arguably have too many beanies already, but here is one of my favorites.
So, You’ve Got the Essentials Covered. What Other Items Should You Include On Your Winter Packing List for Banff & Jasper?
Hot Hands/Hand Warmers
No matter how many pairs of socks you have on, these are good to have on those extra cold days.
Lip Balm/Moisturizer
You’ll be glad to have brought these along because he dry winter air can be brutal after a while.
Microspikes
You can purchase your own or rent them in town. We rented ours when we took the Maligne Canyon tour, but I would’ve loved to have my own when it came time to climb back up the hill at the Lussier Hot Springs when we visited.

Swimsuit & Towels
You may or may not need the towels depending on which hot springs you plan to visit.

What If I Forget One of These Winter Essentials for Banff & Jasper?
If you get to Banff or Jasper and realized you’ve forgotten to bring something along, don’t worry. We’ve all been there. I was quite upset when I got to Lake Louise and realized I’d left my brand new beanie at home. There are plenty of stores downtown Banff and Jasper to purchase cold weather gear, and on the bright side, you’ve got an unexpected souvenir.
