What You Should Know Before Visiting the Castles in Scotland

  • If possible, it is best to book tickets in advance and check their websites so you’re aware of any closures. This ensures your entry slot, simplifies the process of getting inside, and often results in the best price.
  • There are guidebooks available for purchase at most of the castles. We found these to be very informative, and they made great souvenirs!
  • We had the most success with visiting early in the day or very late in the evening to avoid the majority of the crowds. This was especially important at Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle.

The Best Castles to Visit in Scotland

1. Edinburgh Castle

No trip to Scotland is complete without visiting the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Views of the imposing structure can be seen throughout the city, but the nothing compares to a visit within the walls. History buffs will be enthralled with a visit to the castle, and you could easily spend the better part of a day exploring all it has to offer. You might consider taking a guided tour for an even more immersive experience. The sweeping views of the city below aren’t too bad either!

2. Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle is another castle that offers a rich history. The castle’s affiliation with Mary Queen of Scots was what first peaked our interest, but the reason it ranks among our favorites goes far beyond that. It truly is an impressive structure with sweeping views of the countryside below. Booking tickets ahead of time will ensure your entrance, and there are guided tours available as well.

3. Eilean Donan Castle

Among the most iconic castles in Scotland, Eilean Donan is worthy of the hype. Nestled on the water, it is a must for any trip to the Isle of Skye! You can find more information on their opening hours and the facilities available at the castle here. We weren’t aware when we visited, but their are also lodgings available close by that offer stunning views of the castle. The views of Eilean Donan at night are certainly something we hope to experience for ourselves on a return visit!

4. Dunnottar Castle

Your first view of the ruins of Dunnottar Castle will be one you won’t soon forget. The winding path that leads to the outcropping where this seaside castle is perched feels out of a fairytale. Photographs do not do justice to the surreal beauty of this place. Even in ruins, it is easy to imagine just how spectacular this place was in its prime. Tickets can be purchased online or at the castle entrance.

5. Craigievar Castle

If fairytale castles are what you’re looking for, Craigievar Castle is a must. While smaller than some of the other castles on our list, the beauty of this castle certainly earned it a spot on our itinerary. From its pink exterior and the charming countryside that surrounds it, Craigievar truly is a unique gem! It is also conveniently located to several other castles, so one could easily make a day of exploring the area.
